I own an older cat who has lived all of her life with a herpes virus (contracted from her mother). She has frequent bouts of sneezing, coughing, watery eyes and bad teeth. The vets I work with prescribe medications that helps only with the symptoms.
Recently, two of my younger cats began exhibiting the same respiratory problems. We went to the veterinarian and tried a different medication for the younger cats. This did not help at all, but instead, made them begin to vomit.
I stopped the new medicine and tried 1 drop of the Peppermint oil that I use for myself when I have a sinus infection or sore throat (I personally use 1 or 2 drops to my skin).
I applied 1 drop to the bridge of my cats' noses and throats, purposely in a place where they couldn't lick it off, and then gently rubbed it into their fur. Thereafter the sneezing and wheezing and coughing stopped.
I called my vets, but none of them knew anything about essential oil therapy for cats and told me to contact someone who works with essential oils. Because Peppermint is in the same plant family as Catnip and Catmint (which my cats love), I rationalized that in small amounts, it might work and be safe. Sure enough it worked for my cats.
