We have a cabin in a very remote area in northwestern Quebec, in the heart of insect territory. It's so bad that some family members can't go there because they react strongly to insect bites.
Since DEET-based repellents are highly toxic, we experimented with essential oils and the best result we've found is to squirt a bit of V-6 Vegetable Complex into the palm of your hand, add a couple of drops of Purification oil, then rub it onto all exposed skin. It lasts a long time, does not come off when swimming, and smells great! It does not leave any oily or greasy feel, as the V-6 soaks into the skin quickly.
What also works (but doesn't last as long) is to half-fill a 500 ml fine-mist spray bottle with water and add 20 drops of Purification, 10 drops Lemongrass and 10 drops Peppermint, then mist it onto exposed skin.
Even though it only lasts about an hour or less and is not as water/swimming resistant, the periodic misting nicely cools you off on hot days!
