Note: Not all essential oil brands are the same, and you get what you pay for. If you expect to achieve results similar to those described in this testimonial, then ensure that you are using oils from pesticide-free plants. Also, the brand should use 100% pure, high-quality essential oils that do not contain any synthetic additives. Do your own research or ask a trusted friend to find a brand that is reputable. Buyer beware.

In early October, 2010, our youngest son, age 37, was diagnosed with pneumonia and was put on antibiotics. This was not unusual as Jim has had a history of pneumonia.

Four days later, he was still home sick from work with a temperature in excess of 102 degrees. His daughter was also home sick from school that day and had called grandma (me) concerned about her dad.

911 was called and paramedics arrived to find him having a seizure. Medication was given to stop the seizing and a ventilator was inserted to aid his breathing. My son was transported to ICU at United Hospital in St. Paul, MN.

A series of different tests were done...blood, an MRI, lumbar spinal tap, EKG, brain scans etc. None of the tests offered any positive answers, however they did further diagnose him with encephalitis, an inflammation of the brain and they felt it was from some kind of a bug or tick bite.

They kept Jim sedated in an induced coma to calm his agitation. Daily attempts made to regain his consciousness were unsuccessful due to his agitation

On day 2 in ICU, I asked the Infectious Disease doctor if he had any objections to topically applying some therapeutic grade essentials oils on Jim. The doctor advised that there was nothing medicine could do for Jim without a further diagnosis and advised me to do anything I felt may help.

As a result, I along with my sister, who does reflexology and healing touch, began topically applying Frankincense, the Valor and Theives blends, Lemon, and other oils to his feet, neck and temples, as well as diffusing oils into the air in his room. We started diffusing Peace & Calming on the 3rd day.

On the morning of day 4 in ICU, the attempt to regain consciousness was successful and he was able to respond to commands. Survival of this condition is apparently uncommon. Of those that do survive, 70% of them have some sort of brain damage.

On day 5 my son was discharged from the hospital and after 3 weeks he was back at work and he appears to have regained all his mental faculties. The doctors at the ICU call him a walking miracle.

We have been blessed and have much to be thankful for!!

You can find essential oils in health foods stores, but they are not therapeutic grade and are often diluted with chemicals or synthetic materials to make the product stretch further.

Supporting Scientific Studies
1.Associated topics: inflammation, pneumonia — "Cineole has mucolytic, bronchodilating and anti-inflammatory properties and reduces the exacerbation rate in patients suffering from COPD, as well as ameliorates symptoms in patients suffering from asthma and rhinosinusitis.... The effects of Cineole in the treatment of acute bronchitis were clearly measurable and could be proven after a treatment period of merely 4 days. This study corroborates the fact that Cineole actively and significantly reduces cough frequency after four days."Link
2.Associated topics: pneumonia — "The antibacterial activity of 14 essential oils and their major constituents in the gaseous state was evaluated against [respiratory tract pathogens] Haemophilus influenzae, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Streptococcus pyogenes, and Staphylococcus aureus. [The] oils [with cinnamon bark, lemongrass, and thyme being most potent] and their major constituents were shown to be effective against various bacteria tested.... These results indicate that the antibacterial action of essential oils was most effective when at high vapor concentration for a short time."Link
3.Associated topics: inflammation,fever-/-febrile -/-temperature-/-(Pyrexia) — "[W]e studied the anti-inflammatory and gastroprotective effects of C. citratus [Lemongrass] and E. citriodora [Lemon Eucalyptus] essential oils on formol-induced edema and acetic acid induced abdominal cramps in Wistar rats.... In vivo analysis and histological assay showed that the two essential oils displayed significant dose-dependent edema [swelling] inhibition effect over time. They displayed strong analgesic [pain-relieving] and antipyretic [fever-reducing] properties similar to that induced by 50 mg/kg of acetylsalicylate of lysine.... This work demonstrates the anti-inflammatory property of Cymbopogon citratus [Lemongrass] and Eucalyptus citriodora [Lemon Eucalyptus], suggesting their potential role as adjuvant therapeutic alternatives in dealing with inflammatory-related diseases."Link
4.Associated topics: inflammation — "To assess their anti-inflammatory activities, effects of essential oils on neutrophil activation were examined in vitro.... All essential oils tested at 0.1% concentration suppressed TNF-945;-induced neutrophil adherence, and, in particular, lemongrass, geranium, and spearmint oils clearly lowered the reaction even at 0.0125%. Similar inhibitory activities for the neutrophil adherence were obtained by their major constituent terpenoids: citral, geraniol, citronellol and carvone. Thus, some essential oils used as anti-inflammatory remedies suppress neutrophil activation by TNF-945; at a low concentration (0.0125-0.025%) in vitro."Link
5.Associated topics: inflammation — "Ruxiang (Gummi olibanum), the dried gum resin of Boswellia carterii (BC) [frankincense], has been used in traditional Chinese medicine to alleviate pain and inflammation for thousands of years.... The data show that BC extract has significant anti-arthritic and anti-inflammation effects and suggest that these effects may be mediated via the suppression of pro-inflammatory cytokines."Link
6.Associated topics: inflammation — "We have demonstrated that Boswellia frereana [frankincense] prevents collagen degradation, and inhibits the production of pro-inflammatory mediators and MMPs. Due to its efficacy we propose that B. frereana should be examined further as a potential therapeutic agent for treating inflammatory symptoms associated with arthritis."Link
7.Associated topics: pneumonia — "Essential Oil Diffusion [lavender, marjoram, balsam fir, and peppermint] for the Treatment of Persistent Oxygen Dependence in a Three-Year-Old Child With Restrictive Lung Disease With Respiratory Syncytial Virus [RSV] Pneumonia: A 3-year-old female with central core disorder, a static myopathy affecting type one muscle fibers, with an 18-day history of oxygen requirement, acute desaturation episodes on high-flow oxygen, and persistent upper-lobe atelectasis... experienced a rapid reduction in oxygen requirement when treated with diffused plant essential oils after insufficient response to N-acetylcysteine (NAC) and dornase alfa."Link
8.Associated topics: inflammation — "Anti-inflammatory, spasmolytic [muscle spasms], antimicrobial, antioxidant, carminative [flatulence] and immunomodulatory properties of caraway suggest that it might exert beneficial effects on inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).... CHE and CEO [caraway essential oil] at all doses tested were effective in reducing colon tissue lesions and colitis indices and the efficacy was nearly the same when different doses of plant fractions were administered p.o. or i.p..... These data suggest that caraway fractions are both effective and possess anti-colitic activity irrespective of the dose and route of administration."Link
