I began having pain around and behind both eyes. It was as if I had a terrible headache, but only behind the eyes.
After several weeks of the pain, I started to lose some of my vision in the left eye, and it was like seeing a black hole.
A visit to the ophthalmologist brought a diagnosis of Optic Neuritis, which is an inflammation of the optic nerve. He recommended I start on a steroid immediately to avoid permanent damage.
Since I'm more than mildly opposed to pharmaceuticals, I started to ponder the use of essential oils and which one would be most helpful. Copaiba, having anti-inflammatory properties seemed to be the right choice.
After my first application of one drop (shared between the two eyes) of Copaiba along with coconut oil -- applied and gently rubbed into the orbital bone was amazingly soothing--the pain was gone! BUT, it didn't last.
The first day, I applied Copaiba and coconut oil about 15 times for relief. As the days went on, fewer applications were needed. In two weeks time, my sight began to come back, but the pain took about 8 weeks to fully subside.
I continued for several months to apply Copaiba morning and evening. Also, the addition of Omega 3's (fish oil) may have aided in improved eye health. Now, over three years later, I still apply Copaiba after a shower a couple times a week.
