My Palomino horse has had a fungal skin condition called "scratches" on his back legs for years. The condition is also sometimes called dew poisoning, mud fever, pastern dermatitis, foot rot, cracked heels, mud foot, grease heel, or greasy heel. However, my horse has it on the lower part of his back legs instead of the heel. I have tried many remedies -- some from veterinarians -- to no avail.
I just tried this recipe using essential oils. In a 2-ounce spray bottle, I mixed the following:
* 14 drops Melaleuca Alternifolia
* 10 drops Lavender
* 10 drops Lemongrass
* 5 drops Peppermint
I filled the spray bottle the rest of the way with water and then sprayed the horse's legs twice per day. I have noticed marked improvement over the last two weeks.
The nearly all-black area of the "scratches" is now almost all clear hair now.
