I woke up one day with a stiff neck. It started all of a sudden. As I tried to get out of bed I experienced a sharp pain. It went on for over a week, only getting worse with each day that went by as I tried not to move it. The pain began on one side of my neck and increased to the other side of my neck and progressed to the point I couldn't turn my head without excruciating pain. Very sharp pain.
The base of my skull ached in addition to the sharp pains in each muscle that went from my skull to my shoulder on either side of my neck. I tried taking maximum strength and doses of ibuprofen and acetaminophen. The acetaminophen BARELY made a dent in the pain but it did not improve my condition in any way. I thought the ibuprofen would help to reduce the inflammation.
A friend suggested to me that I really needed a muscle relaxant. We use essential oils all the time and I don't know why it took her telling me that to suddenly think, "I wonder which essential oils work as a muscle relaxant!"
So I went to my supply of essential oils and made a concoction of several oils I had on hand that were a known muscle relaxant: Peace & Calming blend, JuvaFlex blend, Lavender, Clove, Thyme and Peppermint.
I put about 20 drops of the single oils and about 10 drops of the blends into a small roller bottle (I had purchased several for a reasonable price online). Then I went to applying it liberally several times that day. I had already stopped taking ibuprofen and acetaminophen so I could tell if my "Stiff Neck Oil Blend" worked, AND IT DID!
I had been sleeping (or dozing, really) all night sitting up on the couch surrounded by pillows. After day 1 of applying the oils, I was able to sleep in my bed. Night 2 in my bed was even better - as the pain/discomfort was 95% gone!
Day 3 I still had a minor issue of not being able to turn my head as far to the left or right as I could before this all started. However, it feels like just more of a limber issue now - rather than a - I'm in pain and feel like I could die issue.
I don't think you need all the different oils I used in order to find relief!! Use whatever you have on hand. They all have multiple uses/benefits. I believe the key is to apply it liberally and frequently. Why didn't I try it first? I'm still shaking my head at myself!
