Twice in my lifetime I have been afflicted with a herniated disc in the L4 - L5 area of my lower back. The first time was in 2000 and it was treated surgically.
Last fall I once again I was afflicted with this brutal injury. No one wanted to do surgery on my back for at least two reasons: I had already had one surgery and secondly, new research suggested that 85% of these cases self-healed.
The pain was greater than all three deliveries of my daughters put together. I needed my husband to dress me. I could only sleep on one side bunched with pillows and it didn't take long for even that to become uncomfortable. It was hard to move or change positions and I needed a cane just to walk twenty to the bathroom.
I was on medication including narcotics but nothing worked. In fact, I just got sick to my stomach. I went to several trips to the chiropractor for acupuncture and a massage therapist. Plus I was followed by my medical doctor at least once a week initially and later a surgeon and physio therapist.
I remember thinking that we treated our pets better than this by putting them out of their misery.
Because the pain did not subside regardless of the medication, I pulled out my oils. I initially utilized the Raindrop therapy oils (not the therapy its self) rubbing and massaging it into the trigger points from nerve root (herniated area in my back) all the way down my left leg to my ankle. I found they worked the best right after I had a hot bath. They created a very warm sensation that would take away the excruciating pain from the damaged nerves.
These Raindrop oils included: Thyme, Basil, Peppermint, Oregano, Wintergreen, Cypress, Marjoram, Aroma-Seiz and Valor.
The second regime that I would do, just before I attempted to nap or go to sleep for the night, included; Brain Power, Cedarwood, Rosemary, Juniper and Wintergreen. I would then either place a warm (not too hot) wheat bag or a heating pad on low to medium heat.
Quite often this second regime would ease the nerves enough and allow me to fall asleep at night.
Now it was quite important that I continued supplements as well. I found out through a biofeedback appointment that I was very low in magnesium among other things. This also became evident in other ways, as the stress from the medication and pain seemed to deplete me even more. Once a regime of magnesium started, my pain level overall started to decrease. I was starting to develop my seizures again, a condition that had been in control for years. Once the magnesium was started, these began to subside again.
I also took a multi-vitamins and some omega3's, some Ca-Mag and some general mineral supplements. As long as I faithfully took them, I found that I felt the change within a day or two. I found that everything worked twice as good when I kept all the supplements going into me.
I also utilized an inversion table. Although I needed help at first with my husband, I still saw an incredible difference when I used it.
Today, pain-wise I am doing much better. I was off work for a total of three months. I am now back to work almost full time. I still utilize my oils as needed. And I have continued with the accupuncture, massage, supplement and now exercise routine.
The pain level has gone from a 12 to 13 on a scale of one to ten all the time - down to maybe 0.5 occasionally. I can sleep in more than one position now. And I don't need anyone to dress me or practically carry me out to the car for my appointments. And in everyday things I never utilize the cane anymore (except when out on ice and snow).
I still have numbness which varies in degree, which I am told will be the last to disappear. When I look back, I am amazed how far I have come in such a short time with no surgery this round.
