Back in 2006 is when I first learned that I had severe adrenal fatigue. Since then, I've read extensively and dutifully followed adrenal fatigue healing programs outlined by the following authors:

I followed the lifestyle and supplement suggestions made by Dr. James Wilson, the eating program suggested by Dr. Diana Schwarzbein, and the elimination of copper sources (I had a copper IUD and copper pipes in our home) as suggested by Dr. Lawrence Wilson.

I spent a lot of money. I can honestly say that I felt better. However, this was only as long as I kept doing and taking all those things. But I never felt like I would ever get to the point of being completely restored.

2010 found our family of 6 in the middle of a deep recession, without work and trying to make ends meet on food stamps, food banks, and my husband's meager UC check.

There was no extra money for any kind of supplements or special foods, so many of my old symptoms returned and then some: Thin, low body temperature, hollow-eyed, low energy and libido, poor sleep quality, digestive problems, weird aches and pains, unable to handle stress or physical exertion without getting sick, and now the inability to concentrate or remember things.

Naturally, I was discouraged, but I was never one to give up. I kept reading and hoping.

About a month ago, I began to look into the possibility of using essential oils to help my adrenals. I became excited with what I was reading and convinced enough to give essential oils a try. After much searching, I finally came across this oil blend recipe:

The recipe is as follows: Spruce Essential Oil, Pine Essential Oil combined in equal parts and added to a carrier oil, such as Hazelnut Oil.

There are about 50 drops per ml for both Spruce and Pine essential oils, so you'd add 75 drops of each to approx 1 oz (1 oz= 2 Tbsp) carrier oil (hazelnut for example).

So this blend is intended to strengthen without stimulating the adrenal glands.It would be applied regularly to the kidney area to be absorbed in the region of the adrenal glands. It is recommended to use for at least 2 weeks, longer if needed.

I saved until I was able to purchase quality, therapeutic grade oils (anything less simply will not work) and a blue-glass bottle with dropper in which to keep my oil blend.

As for the frequency of application, my day starts pretty early, so I apply the oil 4x/day at five hour intervals: 5:30am, 10:30am, 3:30pm, and 8:30pm.

I go to bed at around 10:00, so this works out nicely.

As for method of application, this is what I've been doing:

* 1 drop rubbed to each side of my neck (the area under the ears)

* 10 drops rubbed over the kidney area (directly below where my bra hooks on my back). Not very easy to apply when doing it alone, but I've learned to manage

* 3 drops applied to the sole of each foot ( I believe its called the instep)

If I don't have the time or I feel too lazy, I'll just apply the oil to the kidney area, which is where the adrenals are located.

In addition to this, I've been keeping track of my temperature, as suggested by Dr. Rind (www.drrind.com). Evidently, how your body temperature reacts is a good indication of whether what you are doing is hurting or helping your adrenal glands.

There is a temperature chart where I keep track of my readings. Incidentally, since I began my applications, my temperature has been consistently hovering at the 98.1 range (whereas before, my temp was always well below 97.6)

I should warn you to expect to feel worse before feeling better. This is normally the case when it comes to natural therapies.

For instance, I began to feel very tired and sleepy. I took this as a hint that I should get as much rest as possible. I began to feel worse, with chills, cold hands and feet, constipation and full body sweats. This lasted a couple of days. Then, I began getting spontaneous hot flashes, panic attacks and sleeplessness.

Thankfully, I trusted my body to do what it needed to and kept applying the oil blend, resting as needed, eating simple but nutritious meals, drinking water, and getting some sun. A nice, hot shower was so great once I felt stronger and had the energy to do it.

My plan is to continue using the oil blend, charting my temperature, and using some basic supplements until my temperature is consistently at 98.6 and I have returned to normal weight and energy levels.

As for the supplements I have begun to take, they are:

* Cod liver oil (Twin lab, mint flavor), 1 tsp/day

* Whole Food Vitamin/Mineral (Mercola), 4 tablets per day

* Bioplasma (Hylands Homeopathic Cell Salts) 4 pills, 4x/day

* Adrenal Glandular (Nutricology), 1 capsule 2 times per day

I continue to live a lifestyle that supports the adrenal glands:

* avoid the use of toxic cleaning supplies and body care products

* avoid the use of plastics for food storage, and toxic cookware

* get sun, light exercise, fresh air, enough rest (getting to bed by 10:30 pm)

* A diet high in good quality proteins and fats, low on wheat/sugar/fruit/ high in vegetables, distilled water, good quality sea salt.

With what I've seen and felt so far, I truly expect to be able to restore/regenerate my adrenal glands much sooner than I had ever hoped for.
