Lotus placenta is the respectful practice of keeping baby and placenta together until the cord detaches itself naturally from Babies umbilicus where the ‘tummy button’ is formed.

How do we (midwife and family with a newly birthed baby) 'do' Lotus Placenta Care? It is quite simple, but does require patience and special care. Essential oils, after trying other methods of care, I have found, are superior in their effectiveness of dehydrating the placenta, and minimising unpleasant odors and have kept the placenta 'healthy' throughout the process.

I have used Myrrh or Rosemary Young Living Essential Oils for the best lotus birth results, which my clients chose. Some used Myrrh for the first application, followed by Rosemary oil twice and occasionally three times a day, carefully massaged into the placental tissue. Others used Rosemary oil throughout, for all the applications in Lotus Placenta Care. Here is how we approached the care of the placenta and the application of the essential oils.

After Baby has had his or her first hour at least completely skin to skin with Mum, a breast feed, and some time skin to skin with Dad as well, then the placenta is respectfully washed in warm water, cleaning away remnants of birth blood and any clots. This can be done anytime within the first six to twelve hours to suit the family.

Towel the placenta dry and apply 1-2 mls or 20-40drops of Myrrh over each side of the placenta and membranes. Massage the oil in lightly then place the placenta on a ready draining rack where air can circulate freely around it, as it drains the fluids that the placenta is made up of.

Repeat the Myrrh application at the next day. More can be used, but in experimenting, one or two applications of Myrrh seem to give the same amount of effective removal of fluids from the placenta as does 4-6 applications. Rosemary oil will do similarly, just that some couples prefer to use the ancient sacred oil, does a great job of reducing odour and continuing the drying process. Reapply as often as needed once to three times a day, depending on climate and humidity to keep the placenta healthy as it dehydrates to dry well.

As the placenta reaches its next stage of letting go, there can be a stronger odour. probably best to keep it open to air, as the placentas that are wrapped in towels and placed in bags for longer periods of time, do not seem to dry as well as those open to air more of the time. Of course wrap baby with placenta for visitors or trips out as you feel.

Rosemary oil can also be used to help in odour change time. These are the main ways I have seen used so far.

There appears to be deep respect, or sense of sacredness for their baby and placenta - parents choosing this, as a sacred ceremony respect of Baby and Placenta, allowing an etheric alchemy to occur where baby 'gives' to placenta any trauma or stresses taken on during pregnancy, labour and birth while the Placenta 'gives' to baby the pristine knowing held within the 'placental energetic field' that were not traumatised by paving the way through the birth canal as baby did.

Lotus Birth requires much patience and definitely gives a small window of time around Babies birth where the mood and specialness is kept intact a little longer.

I have observed new mums, who seem to absorb ‘how to handle and care for their newborn’ in a natural way, by sleeping with their hand on the placenta with that request, that doesn’t come so readily for all with non – lotus births.
