Ear mites in dogs

I am a purebred dog breeder and over the last couple years, we were forced to keep our kennel in a fairly transient area.

When we first moved in, our dogs were exposed to an over infested cat population. In turn, they acquired ear mites. At that time, unbeknown to me that other treatments existed, we sought vet advice and utilized some prescription medication from them.

Fortunately the cats cleared out as my dogs do not take too kindly to them......Labradors love a chase, LOL.

However, less than a year later, some new dogs came into our kennel in which we queried ear mites. We never took them to the vet but instead we googled and found a wonderful ear cleaner made of essential oils.

Although the vet never found ear mites in our pups at the time ( we had a litter on deck), we did clean all dogs and pups ears at the minimum of twice daily with this wash for at least 10 days.

Surprisingly, the dirt and debris wax (normal symptoms of a possible ear mite infestation) in those dogs that appeared infected seemed to disappear and we have not had a problem since.

Today I use the recipe as a regular ear wash as it has a wonderful smell and does such a good job. I only apply it once or twice a month or when prepping dogs for dog shows.

The recipe;

- 1 oz of witch hazel oil or witch hazel astringent (I prefer the astringent)
- 5 drops of Melaleuca Oil
- 5 drops of Clove Oil

Mix together and place a few drops in the dog's ear canal. Massage the ear for at least 30 to 60 seconds to loosen all the wax or ear mite dirt. Then Wipe out with a clean cotton ball. Do this until the ear is clean. And repeat at least twice daily for no less than 10 days.

Please do not use melaleuca oil on cats as their systems cannot handle this oil.
