Fighting allergies with lavender and peppermint

2009 was the worst summer for allergies in Michigan! I was taking 2 Zyrtec-D every day at times with little relief to my allergies and swollen sinuses. Finally, I asked a friend about solutions using essential oils. She recommended lavender to calm the allergic reaction and peppermint to relieve the congestion.
My regimen began with rubbing 2 drops of lavender in my palms and inhaling 2-3 times. I did this every 3-4 hours at first. In addition, for congestion I put a drop of peppermint oil on my tongue and inhaled deeply up into my nose. With severe congestion, I also rub a drop of peppermint under my nostrils.
My relief was so encouraging I purchased a diffuser to use by my bed at night. I use 5-7 drops of lavender and 3-5 drops of peppermint in my diffuser each night. Since adding the diffuser to my regiment, I now just inhale the lavender twice each day. Once before heading off to work in the morning and once when I return in the evening.
Every now and then, I feel those histamines kicking in and I'll inhale some lavender. Also, if I sense congestion coming on, I drink a glass of water with 2 drops of peppermint oil (also aids digestion) or rub a drop under my notrils in order to breathe freely.
I've found, as with anything, you have to learn to be aware of your body's reactions and come up with a regiment that works for you. My friend's son's allergies are so bad she makes lavender capsules for him to take morning and evening. I'm just thrilled to be using a natural alternative rather than running to the drugstore.
