Horse colic remedies

Horse colic (#1) – My yearling Gidget wasn’t feeling well. She was standing apart from the herd, wasn’t eating and was just not herself. I checked my Essential Oil Desk Reference for colic and it suggested a product called Di-Gize which I didn’t have, but when I checked the ingredients of Di-Gize I had two of the ingredients (Peppermint and Lemongrass).

I took Gidget into the barn, put 5 drops Lemongrass and 5 drops Peppermint with about 10 drops carrier oil in my hand. I rubbed my hands together and put my hands up towards her, she stepped forward and put her nose right by my hands and deeply inhaled. I then took some of the oil and rubbed the insides of her ears and the remaining oil on my hands I “rubbed off” along her spine. Within 1 minute, she had a bowel movement. I let her out of the barn and she joined the herd and started eating.

Horse colic (#2) – Our three year old filly Dru came in to the barn for the night, ate her oats and then immediately lay down... this is NOT usual. She stood up again and started forcefully swishing her tail. These are both signs of colic. She lay down again within 2 minutes and my husband got her up haltered and started walking her while I ran to the house to check what to do again for Colic (in Desk Reference).

Again I didn’t have the Di-Gize product but did have lemongrass and peppermint. As this case appeared worse than #1 case, I also decided to take FOUR capsules of the Young Living product 'Digest and Cleanse' and squirt the oils from the capsule into a syringe... I then also put Equilic (like molasses) in the syringe. We squirted the Digest and Cleanse/Equilic mixture in her mouth. I then took lemongrass and peppermint, mixed it with carrier oil (EVOO) and rubbed this mixture along both front coronet bands, along both flanks towards umbilical area, in both of her ears and then let her smell my hands.

To be on the safe side we called our vet and requested she come over. By the time she arrived, Dru had had 2 bowel movements and the vet said we obviously had been doing something right. The vet gave her a shot of Banamine and advised we walk her for another 10 – 15 minutes. We started walking her again and about 10 minutes into the walk she literally jumped off the ground with all four feet, made a loud squealing noise, kicked her back legs and passed a horrendous amount of gas. She was fine from there on in.
