Woodworking and sinus congestion

When I purchased my wood lathe ten years ago I was very excited to start turning some projects. I called a friend and he brought over some spalted birch. He had been telling me how neat it looked with the little grey/black lines in it.

I didn’t have a respirator or even a cheap paper mask and we turned and sanded some candle holders. If you don’t know what spalted means it has black lines of mold in the wood, it is almost rotting. So I basically breathed in a bunch of moldy dust that night. I then got a very nasty sinus congestion that lasted a couple weeks.

I now have a GOOD respirator but still get very congested the next day or two from any saw dust, even while wearing the respirator, I still have that reaction. So two years ago I started putting a drop or two of R.C. or Eucalyptus Radiata right on the filter cartridge before I start any wood working and I do not have any of the symptoms the night after or days following the woodworking projects.

If I cut wood with the chainsaw or anything I still get all stuffed up, but when I know I will be sanding or doing anything with fine saw dust I wear the respirator with the oil and have no problems. If you or a friend ever noticed this type of problem even while wearing your safety equipment, please try it. It lets me enjoy my hobby much more than before. I hope it helps you as well.
