OXYGEN LEVELS

My Grandson, Camryn, 16 months old, was hospitalized for treatment due to RSV, a significant respiratory infection which can be quite serious. Cam was put on breathing treatments every four hours and steroids several times a day, as well as antibiotics by IV. When he was admitted to the hospital, his oxygen saturation was bouncing between 80% and 83%. 100% is the norm and what is normally expected and reasonable for a baby.

Even after two days of medications, IV antibiotics, and being on 100% oxygen 24 hours per day, as soon as the hospital dropped the oxygen level below 100%, Camryn’s levels dropped back to the low 80% ile. Even with the oxygen on at 100%, they were unable to raise it past 90%.

When I arrived at the hospital on the third day, I explained to my son and daughter-in-law that I wanted to put some oils on Cam, and I explained that they were totally non-invasive. I further explained that I was hoping the oils would increase the body’s ability to distribute and take in the oxygen, and help to stabilize his oxygen levels. They agreed to let me try. It was approximately 5:00 pm. Just before I applied the oils, the nurse came in and took out Cam’s IV, saying that it was clear that the antibiotics were not working, so the doctor had agreed to remove the line. Also, Cam had been drinking, but had not wanted to eat anything for three days.

At the suggestion of Jennifer Hansen, I started with cedarwood on his feet. I applied the second application at 7:00 pm. We noticed immediately, before 7:00 pm, that his oxygen level came up several points and stayed at about 90%. In the meantime, at about 8:00 pm, I also applied R.C. on Cam’s back, following his back-bone, and his level went up to 94% almost immediately. This was less than 6 hours after I had flown in and arrived at the hospital.

He started nibbling at munchies that Abbie, his mom, had brought in, that he hadn’t been interested in for the preceding three days. He started running around the room, and showing interest in his toys, also new since his hospitalization, and finally fell asleep. I applied both oils again at around 11:00 pm before we went to sleep in chairs in Cam’s hospital room. He slept well, not waking through the night, which was also new since the onset of the infection. His oxygen level stayed at 94% all night. I applied the next round of oils at about 3:00 a.m., then again around 5:00 a.m.

When the nurse came in to check him at about 6:30 the next morning, she saw that the level had not dropped below 94% over night, so she went to ask the doctor if we could try lowering the oxygen again. By the time she had returned with the answer from the doctor, an hour or so later, and checked the saturation again, it had climbed to about 96%. In the interim, I had applied both oils again.

We were very pleased. The nurse reduced the oxygen to 75% and commented that something had sure caused a huge improvement in a very short time. She returned 30 minutes later to check his levels. The oxygen saturation had climbed to 98%. She lowered the oxygen to 50% and again came back in another 30 minutes to check the saturation. It had gone up to 99% and was holding there. She again commented that she didn’t know what was different, but that something sure had made a big difference, and she also stated she was pretty sure he was going to be going home soon.

Since he was doing so well, she turned off the oxygen entirely, and again returned in 30 minutes to find out how he was doing without any pure oxygen. In the interim, Cam’s oxygen level had gone up to 100%. She unhooked him and said they wanted to observe him for a couple of hours and make sure that the levels did not drop again, which they didn’t. He ate a good breakfast, pancakes and sausage, which was also a surprise since he hadn’t wanted anything until the night before. We all took him home a couple of hours later, and his levels stayed at 100% for all of the follow-up appointments with the pediatrician in the following week.
