Airport Security & Flying With Essential Oils

Note: Not all essential oil brands are the same, and you get what you pay for. Dear Mary Ann,

Thank you for your email. Concerns about flying with essential oils have grown in the wake of uncovered terrorist plots to bomb airliners with liquids brought on board in carry-on luggage. Specifically, our distributors and members are concerned about what to do with their oils as they fly around the country under new TSA regulations.

It is now standard procedure to require all people to remove all liquids and gels except for a few special categories of medical supplies from their carry-on bags before boarding a plane. Essential oils do not fit within the TSA's definition of these excluded products, so distributors should place all essential oils in their checked baggage before reaching security checkpoints.

Young Living has confirmed with TSA representatives that shielded-film bags, which are lined with lead, are NOT allowed in checked luggage, and will be subject to confiscation if airport security personnel see it. Therefore, distributors and members should not use these types of bags in order to avoid confiscation of oils.

Members are thus concerned about the effect of airport security x-rays on the quality of their essential oils, and are concerned that not using a shielded-film bag will reduce the potency of their oils in checked baggage. It is unclear to what extent airport x-rays may or may not affect the properties of our essential oils; therefore, for the most safe transportation of your oils, we recommend alternate methods of sending your oils ahead of you.

Again, it is unclear if airport x-rays do any harm to our essential oils; placing your oils in an un-lined piece of checked baggage may not be harmful to them. Because this is not clear, however, if you are concerned about the quality of your oils, alternate means of transportation are recommended.
