Thieves Cleaner in laundry

When my son left home, I washed up his bedding and other bedroom stuff. It had that funky 'not washed soon enough' smell so I added some Thieves cleaner to the laundry. We have always used unscented detergent so we have not perfume smell to cover up odors. Not being laundry needed right away, I forgot about it completely for 2 days. This was hot summer time. When I did remember it, I was afraid to open the washer for fear of the smell. To my surprise, after 2 days there was only a faint 'Thieves' smell. I now use either Thieves cleaner or Thieves oil put directly into my liquid laundry soap every load.
