Background: My husband tends to make kidney stones on a regular basis. In 34 years of marriage, he has had about 175 stones.
He carries Lemon oil and the Believe oil blend with him when he travels, in case he has a kidney stone incident while he is on the road. He should be taking a capsule of these oils regularly, but he doesn't. He believes in essential oils but has a hard time making them part of a regular routine.
Last Thursday, he had some pretty bad pain and began to alternate between sweats and chills every few hours. I started having him make capsules of Lemon and Believe oils every few hours, not knowing that he was only using 2 drops of each in a capsule.
On Friday when I discovered how little he had been using, I took over making the capsules and made up a full-size "0" capsule of each essential oil every few hours.
My husband did not get any better through the weekend, even with taking the capsules every few hours. So finally late Sunday night I took him to the emergency room. They admitted him after doing a CT scan and finding a 12 mm stone in his left ureter. He knew it was there, as through the weekend he had felt it moving from his back, down lower, and then to the front. It was slightly above his bladder but was not dropping into it.
They also found a 2 cm stone in his left kidney, not causing any issues yet. Because of the chills and sweats, they assumed my husband had an infection, so they decided not to try to get the stones but instead inserted a stent so the kidney could drain. The procedure failed, as the stone had been there quite a while. The ureter was swollen all around it, and the stent could not be used.
So my husband went to the catheterization laboratory (cath lab), where they inserted a drain directly into his left kidney, connecting it to an external bag. They started him on a broad-spectrum IV antibiotic for infection because when they went into the kidney they encountered a tremendous amount of pus, which they collected for culture.
Fast forward to today, Thursday (the procedure was done on Monday). I had a glass water bottle at the hospital for my husband and had him drink some water with 25 drops of Lemon essential oil in it every 4-5 hours all week. He continued to spike a fever once a day, which is why he is still in the hospital.
However, the culture NEVER GREW ANYTHING. The urologist (a new one -- my husband's previous one was against essential oils) actually admitted that we might have killed the infection at home with the essential oils for those 4 days before even going into the hospital. We did not ask him about the fever, but I was thinking it was my husband's body in a shock-like reaction to the embedded stone.
He is going home tomorrow! Even if he still has a fever once a day, they are still sending him home with an oral antibiotic (for a nonexistent infection, it seems) and pain meds. Of course we will continue with 25 drops of Lemon essential oil in water or NingXia Red juice every 4-5 hours.
On the 18th they will use the drain opening to go into the kidney to remove the large stone and to go down into the ureter to remove the stone that is blocking it. I firmly believe that after another 10 days of Lemon essential oil multiple times daily, there is not going to be a stone to remove. They will have dissolved or broken up enough to pass on their own. I will keep everyone informed!
I have to say that we are blessed to have a hospital that does not object to the use of essential oils -- either diffused in the room or applied or ingested. And we have found a gem in this urologist (who happens to be Chinese, which may explain his open-mindedness) who also does not object to us using essential oils.
